We are not here to make friends. We are here as educators of our profession and to equip our students to be the best clinician they can be.
Maintaining a honest and sincere professional image is a required aspect to maintaining a possitive control over a younger generation class of students. Once you have their respect of being fair, you will have their attention and willingness to work with you for the benfit of the students that really want to learn your class topic.
We expect professionalism from our students so we should also be professional at all times and when the students feel respected they will respect you in turn. Strong holding does not work and shows a lack of confidence on your part as the instructor. Again, I believe this goes back to communication and expectations that you set forth the first day of class.
I find I have to do the opposite, but then I have more older, non-traditional students. They want me to relate to them one on one, on a more personal basis.
Hi Ann marie,
Absolutely! Our students need professional role models to look up to.

I believed that maintaining a professional image helps to gain respect and set boundaries
Hi Heather,
I concur! Students do not need another buddy. They need role models. Let's lead by example.

Hi Morgan,
Favoritism is frowned upon. Treat all students the same. Maintain a professional image at all times.

Hi DeShaun,
You are on point. The relationship between the student and instructor should be strictly professional. It becomes way too risky when the relationship becomes personal.

Hi Luanna,
The policy also needs to be fully enforced.

Hi David,
You are right! If students do not respect you; they will not listen to anything you have to say.

It sets guidelines and demonstrates your committment to the profession
It is hard to be fair with the students if the boundaries are not clear. If you are closer to some students than others, you will be tempted to give them breaks, or bend your rules. It is also hard for students to see you as an authority figure if you are their friend or if these boundaries are blurred.
I feel like it is important because if you don't other students may think you are favoring some students, and that is not fair. It is true that they will respect you more see you more as someone they can trust and come to with problems or worries.
Because students will get the notion that you are their buddy and then they will feel that they have some "leeway" when it comes to the rules. You have to keep a physical distance as well. During lunches Instructors should not be out with students Joking about the weekend or other personal activities. That line gets crossed real fast. I have witnessed it time and time again.
This is an excellent point. A difficult line. It is easier to keep the policy than reign in the rules.
if you do not have clearly defined roles, responsibilities and authority you will lose the respect of your students and will find it very difficult to enforce policies and rules
It is very important for classroom management that an instructor of students maintain a professional distance so that the classroom environment does not become lax. If the classroom environment becomes lax, students will not have respect for the instructor, will not listen, will challenge the instructor, break the rules, and have no feelings of accountability. works.
with some students that still is not enough, they want the A without having to work for it, want to do and say as they please, but if you stay ahead of this and have a solid director, the student will see professionalism at its finest.
It is important, because not only will it keep the class environment and educational process professional, it will keep the instructor out of questionable relationships with the student(s).
