Respect VS Being liked

It is difficult to balance being liked and being respected. Instructors must stick to moral decisions when it comes to course content in order to be respected. Student pay to learn, not for new friends.

I agree, I set the tone the first day. I have high expectations for the students and they in turn have high expectations for their learning. I explain in detail how I run a classroom ... the objectives, consequences and rewards they can achieve. Its a win/win for all. Students usually appreciate the honesty up front and work harder to achieve the respect of the Instructor as well as fellow students

I make sure that I establish my expectations on the first day of class. My students know what to expect from me as well, and I earn their respect by not wavering on my standards. I explain to them that I would not be doing them any favors if I lowered my expectations, and that I am working to help them be successful.

I set the tone of my class on the first day, students know what I will and will not tolerate they may not like me because they think I am mean but by the end of the class they all love me. You have to give respect in order to get it.

Bieng liked vs being respected, respect is of upmost importance. Lieke of respect can lead to classroom problems from the disrespectful students.

It is difficult to balance but I think a lot of respect will be earned from your students when you can relate your teaching to the things you have accomplished in the field and illustrating the practicality of the things they are learning.

I think it is both, Getting on the wrong side of a student, can cause you to lose respect. Respect is important, but being on the same plane of the class is inportant

Hi David,
Yes not waivering has it advantages. Even adult learners will take advantae of you if they know they can get over on you.
