Classroom Management

The style and technique by which you manage a class is the most important factor to students retaining information. The controller and guide combination has worked for me over the past fifteen years of teaching. I see myself more like a coach and I set the standards high and promote self expression and art in my students work.

cynthia, thanks for sharing and glad to see the class was useful. What is any takeaways did you gain from the class and what changes will you be making in your own classroom? Thanks for anything you can share.

James Jackson

Many years of management experience outside of the college environment has certainly help me with the application of those skills into an adult college environment. In my school, we have instructors who run the gamut from very uninvolved to gestapo-- seriously-- so that when they come to me in their last term, I've got a very challenging group! Being able to shift styles and adapt is critical. This course reminded me again of some of the basic tools necessary to succeed. I found it very useful.

Unique, good observation. Many students are resource deprived and may not have good support structures. While we as instructors need to keep our relationships with students at the highest level of professionalism we can also be positive role models and help to inspire then where others in their life may only try to break them down.

I would agree, when I learned about the different styles of management I knew mine right ways was the guide. I like my students to know that they can come to me and yet still learn from me. The demographics of my campus require that style because many of the students don't have that type of role model or coach.

angela, what are some of the "best ways to controll the classroom" you have picked up over the last few months? Why do you feel some techniques are more effective than others?

James Jackson

Marco, no need to fix what is not broken. If you are happy with your results and your students retain and go on to graduate, keep doing what your doing.

James Jackson

I agree with you. I have not taught as long as you but I am learning fast the best ways to controll the class room as well as be an effective instructor
