Small crowded classrooms with little options
We have many classrooms that are filled completely or with only a few seats remaining. The rooms cannot easily be modified to encourage groups or different tasks based on learning styles and classroom objectives. Does anyone have any suggestions for this? I would love to have more group activities but have not found a good way to do that.
I understand your problem Edward. I teach a Patisserie lab class with 25 students, not seasoned students but newbies. It's been hard dealing with space, age differences, maturity levels, etc. In my demonstrations, I try to focus on the positive and I never bring attention to the problem of space. I spin it like this. Yes, the space is tight but this will teach you to work in a clean, efficient, and very organized way. The students usually complain in the beginning but later realize this is reality. I also use group activities on a weekly basis, this helps save time and increases teamwork which is very useful in my culinary world. In your situation with your class, do you have the opportunity to step outside the classroom for group events, can you go outside or use a library? I try to keep people moving around and a change of scenery can be very useful and enjoyable for all.
Edward, one idea is to discuss options with your students. Let them know your interest in trying something new but you also realize the classroom you are in has some limitations. Be positive and do not be negative about the institution but get the students to brainstorm ideas with you and you may be surprised how creative they can become when given an opportunity to provide assistance at resolving such issues.
