First day

When i have a new group of students, who are just getting to their electives, i like to refresh their knowledge of the class rule and procedures. i find this helps with some confusion that some students have

Jennifer, one good technique is to have each student introduce them self and as part of their introduction ask them to identify what they expect from the class, from the instructor and from their peers. As you gather some of the expectation from peers you can then engage in a group discussion on what they expect to take place when students do not follow the class rules. Get students to set the expectations so when you have to act upon some type of disciplinary action you can simply state that according to our rules that you the students implemented I need to take the following action based on your behavior. The wording will vary from situation to situation but the focus is on the how the students set these rules and you are implementing their own rules.

I will be starting a new class and am open to any suggestions on how to engage students and peak there interest from the very beginning. It can be very exciting yet nerve racking on the first day. It will be both theirs and my first day and want it to start on the right track!
