Class Management
How can you manage adult learners who didn't do well while they were in school before college...I have adult learners who still can't read
Our campus has a policy for anyone with any disability to be assisted. Whether it is getting tests read aloud to them in a different room, extra time or recording equipment so they can review the lecture again in their own time. It seems to work well, even considering that we are a mostly hands on type of learning facility, we still have to test them and they have to read manuals when they get into the field after graduation.
they can learn visualy but, their issues of not being able to read have to be addressed so they will be able to advance in their career
Darlene, We have had students who have learning disabilites. There is a person on our staff who will read aloud the test questions to the students. Those students still struggle with classroom lectures so we try to bring in other teaching methods, such as using visual aids.
Darlene, this is a topic for your administration. Literacy is a national issue and not a topic you will be able to resolve alone. From the institutional perspective students need to be tested so their initial course offerings can be setup to best set them up for success. If they have reading and comprehension challenges then they may best benefit from a college prep course in literacy, reading and comprehension. Such courses will add to the overall cost of their education but is also the best insurance policy that they money they do spend will be well vested.
