Managing Student Dilemmas

If I have two students that are having personal issues that do not actually pertain to school but rather to their personal issues, how do I handle this without letting it affect my relationship with either of them?

Lauren, school is their release from reality. For a given number of hours each week they can forget about their issues at home and focus on their education. It is through this focus they can begin to realize a reality outside of their current situation. Through education they can someday find themselves in a real career and will better have the means to overcome some of their current limitations. This is how I handle such situations, remind students that their time in school is precious and to take full advantage of letting life's harsh realities take a back seat if only for a few hours each week.
