bus excuse

I have often encountered
the "I have to catch the bus so I have to leave early" excuse. I guess I identify my inner "buddy"
instructor role, but I often have sympathy for the student who has to rely on public transportation. What are some techniques to curtail this problem?

I hear that excuse in my class too, and the bus in my area only runs till 11pm. which is the time our class ends. My suggestion to the student was to change to a morning class whenever possible.

James, first and foremost I would be researching the bus patterns for my public transit students. I live in the Chicago area and public transit is very common. In our area the bus schedules tend to be every 7 to 15 minutes so if they miss one bus they do not have to wait long for another so it is easy for me to enforce staying until the end of class because I can say with confidence that they can simply catch the next bus. If your transit schedule is much different and missing one bus or train causes a student to wait an hour then I would talk with my administration about making some changes with the class schedule.
