Adult Learners
I've found that a lot of my adult students are easier to manage then those coming from high school or younger. They are usually more interested in getting the work done. As a young adjunct I try very hard not to be a buddy, its very easy to get caught up in it since I teach students that are very close in age to me with common interest.
I wish I could totally agree, but sometimes they have the age but not the maturity. I have to use a least three of the management styles at any given time. Few I have taught that work at getting the material and move on. But, they are the ones that keep you motivated and coming back to the classroom everyday.
The same problem exist everywhere. I spend more time than I would like to admit telling adult students to put away their phones during training. Most often they are the ones that require extra help because they missed a lot of the lecture.
I agree that adult learners are more interested in learning, which is why I enjoy teaching adults. You can enjoy conversations with students about common interests, but keep it to a minimum and depending on the length of the class, discuss it during a break.
I wish that majority of students follow school procedures & policies better so that we can have more of a productive, cooperative environment . I have difficult time with students that focus on their phones too much.
