Difficult question...I think an instructor has to be able to "read" the class, every minute, every hour, every subject. I like to be organized. However, no matter how I schedule the class, things may not be working. I need to be alert to what the class is saying (verbally, but usually non-verbally) and make appropriate changes.
Julie,
That is something that the students pick up on. If they know that you are just going through the motions, they will see it and then not give you as much effort.
Philip Campbell
From my experiences, I'd say that caring not only about the subject but the students is key. When they feel that you are willing to put yourself out there for them they try harder to please.
I believe that passion for teaching and the subject matter that you are teaching is the quality that seperates an exceptional teacher from the rest of the pack. If an instructor is passionate about their craft they will be highly motivated to be the best they can be, and will be willing to put in the hard work needed to be a great teacher.
Highly effective instructors have almost instinctual abilities. They can help a student arrive at the "right answer" without actually giving it to them. Students will have positive experiences and begin to trust their own thinking ablities in regards to critical thinking skills and problem solving.
Dawn,
Well said Dawn. A positive attitude can set the stage for a positive class.
Philip Campbell
Motivation and a positive attitude are the two most important qualities of effective instructors.
A positive attitude is the most important characteristic of an effective teacher. A genuinely positive attitude is contagious. The positive attitude goes beyond the subject matter. For instance I let my students know that I love the classroom, I love teaching, and I love this class! A positive attitude will motivate the students to accomplish the necessary work required for certification.
I strongly agree it's important to have a positive prospective to to ahve a positive result.
Judy,
Clear expectations and consistent expectations are important. It is also important to keep the same expectations across classes.
Philip Campbell
Integrity us the most important skill because it is our resposibility to evaluate others
I believe that a positive attitude is most important along with respect for others. An instructor with high integrity will be aware of the rules and policies and be a good role model for students. It is also important to give clear expectations on the first dayof class.
Sam ,
This is true and I am sure there are many examples that you could use to show that. Keep it up.

Lisa,
The attitude of an instructor will sway the attitudes of the students. If you are have a bad day, the students will too.
Philip Campbell
Miranda,
Being upbeat changes the classroom environment. That is a big part.
Philip Campbell
Enthusiasm and the ability to engage the students during class time. Let the students know you care about their needs and desires to succeed.
When students truly believe that you, as the instructor, are there for their benefit and you will do all you can to educate and inspire them to be the best they can be.
I believe the most important quality that sets instructors apart from others is their attitude. If an instructor comes into class with a positive attitude and brings out positive emotions in their students, they will be much more effective in their instruction as well as the management of their classroom.
Respect. Give respect and you will get respect
I'm going to have to say a positive attitude. I always try to be very positive and upbeat when teaching, and my students have told me numerous times how much they appreciate that. Being positive tends to make the class more interesting, and it tends to keep the students more motivated.
