Big Me Little You
This discussion of soft skills reminds me of some training in the past where we debated the best teaching approches. If you the instuctor can bring yourself to the level of the student you will be more effective. This does not mean you lose the ability to manage your class or resolve conflict. You have to find a level of empathy that works for you. I find it quite effective to look upon my students as though they are my children. I think most of the time they realize I am looking out for their best interests, the students that is.
scott,
I like that concept. Keep sharing.

The big me little you mentality never works in the classroom or anywhere else in the world. The little me and big WE is a much better concept here.
Steve,
Working with them as equals is a great way to look at them. Always keep the separation form teacher and student.

Since most of my students are adults with a few years of work experience behind them, I think looking upon them as children would be difficult, at best. But speaking with them as equals is another thing. When students understand they can question anything, and these subjects are debated by all with equal enthusiasm, they begin to "own" something of their education. I find these classes to be much more effective, and the grades at the class's end reflect that. By coincidence, this same attitude has served me well on those rare instances when I am working with a younger crowd. Relevant at all age levels...
Benson,
Great point about allowing the student to be involved without losing the authority of the class. It can work to your advantage.
