Important Soft Skills
What do you think the most important soft skills are for success in any workplace?
THe most important soft skills for success in any work place I think are Attention to detail, being a good team player, Conflict resolution and Helping to enhance services, I think that they are all strongly related specially being a team player and managing conflicts which are common when having to interact with others , having the ability to keep your attention focused on working objectives and details rather than social relationships, rumors, etc
John,
Showing this respect will go a long way with students.
Philip Campbell
I believe that understanding the environment and reacting with a learned control mechanism based on experience will allow an instructor to achieve the soft skills required to make rational decisions where confrontation and rebellion are all but extinguished before the worst happens. An instructor must be well versed in people skills to deal with the diversity and adversity we see in the classroom in the 21st century.
Respect for the efforts of others which really leads to empathy and good communication between disparate individuals
I really think you can't have a positive attitude without common sense. If your attitude is not what it should be you will be exhibiting behaviors that are not conducive in the learning setting. Students will see this and mimic.
The most important soft skill is a sense of humor followed positive attitude and good common sense
I feel that the most important soft skills are dependability and integrity. Both are skill sets that help avoid unwanted situations and difficulties at work and enhance the workplace and workplace experience for all involved.
Dora,
Politeness in a world where we all want to get our own way is sometimes overlooked.
Philip Campbell
Communicating successfully, being polite and tacful takes a big part in the workplace.
I think the most important soft skills in classroom is to be able to not lose control.
Miriam,
Very true. We see this a lot. Organizations are asking more about attendance than grades.

Various companys looks for a different mix of skills and experience depending on the business and industry. However, it is no longer enough to be an expert. These companys are also wanting you to complement these unique core competencies, there are certain "soft skills".
Charles,
A positive attitude helps everyone else to have the same.
Philip Campbell
I honestly believe that the most important soft skill is "Having a Positive Attitude." This soft skill is a necessity for all of the other top ten soft skills. Having a positive attitude shows that you are excited about your role in the organization, building great working relationships, being a great team player, and providing extraordinary service to your customers.
As instructors, especially of adults, we must wear many hats at the same time. For those that are younger we are parental figures, for those a bit older we are mentors or role models. Many days we are motivational speakers. Many days we are historians. Many days we are psychologists or therapists. Many days we are career counselors. Many days we are all of those at once, all while trying to simply be "chef".
We learn to listen, we learn to critique but not judge, and most of all we learn to use our common sense and experience as instructors to navigate through our daily adventures in the kitchen. If these qualify as soft skills then we definitely are using them in order to be successful in our workplace.
All of the soft-skills are important but in different aspects of the job, I think some are more important than others.
As an employee, I think being a team player and attention to detail are the most important though being drug-free goes without saying.
As an instructor, I think a positive attitude and Common sense would probably be the most important.
Chandra,
Great points. If we all did these i would be great.
Philip Campbell
I agree! I feel that the rank of all the soft skills changes with every student from day to day. I think that by practicing those skills along with the EQ skills everyday will help me to stay mindful and hopefully, a more effective instructor.
Dear Mr. Campbell,
For myself, as an instructor, the five out of 10 most important "soft skills" are:
1. Positve attitude- an enthusiastic attritude about the subject you are teaching that becomes contagious to your students.
2. Dependability- An instructor who is accountable, reliable and willing to do more with students and other team members.
3. Integrity- working in the teaching field with non bias or prejudgiduces.
4.Effective work relationships and understaanding others. And lastly,
5. "Common sense"- The link that bonds all other soft skills together.
These soft skills are crucial for a teacher, along with a strong, positive, productive, and progressive mind that makes practical decisions, is drug free, and has great student and "workplace skills."
Sincere thanks,
Robert Falite
