Empathy

The ability to apply empathy can make or break the rapport that we have with students. Where I have seen a challenge is the ability to empathize with the student without enabling them. It tends to be an interesting balance between doing what is right by the student and holding them accountable to the standards set for their progress. I would love to hear feedback from the group on how you balance this issue in your practice?

Lance,
That's correct. Sometimes the challenge is getting others to be on board with that thought as well. Every little bit helps.

I agree, we need to change can't to I'll try

Tell them about a situation like theirs that you've been in,and understand where they are coming frome. Then tell them how you resolved it and were able to overcome it.Sometimes solutions they havent considered can be presented in this way.The important thing is to show you can find a solution and not let something stop you frome attaining your goals.go over, under,or around but never stop climbing to the top!

Susan,
Keep that train of thought going.

I agree, most of the students just need to know that someone can understand and then they often change their can't to I'll try

Kathy,
Yes, keep them positive and progressing.

I agree Can't means I wont they are setting themself up for failure from the get go. Depending on what the reason is behind the event that is keeping them from staying on task I will try to give them a positive outlook and example to move foward quickly

Shannon,
Bravo. I tell people that I can't, means "I won't".
Philip Campbell

I can not stand to here the word I CAN'T if you let them get by with always saying this you are enabling the students to do put their best foot forward.

david,
Good points. Enabling is what hurts most of us in our tasks daily.
