Soft Skills
after reading the 1st part of this section, I am surprised at how much I already use soft skills in my class. I have also picked up some pointers that I will use in the future. has anyone else used soft skills as much as the section talks about?
We as instructors must lead by example. By utilizing the soft skills outlined in this session, our students will see firsthand appropriate workplace behaviors. As a bonus, it also helps with our own job satisfaction.
Dorothea,
I am glad you enjoyed this and had an eye opening experience.

This is a great eye-opener for me.. Yes, I have touched bases on most, however, there is so much more information that I found of value. I have re-evaluated my actions within myself, my relationship with my students and others I come in contact with daily. Critiquing my soft skills and emotional intelligence will enable me to improve my professional performance. Thank you!
Of the ten soft skills that are we are given, there are three that I constantly work at in the classroom: 1) Integrity, 2) Positive attitude, and 3) Understanting and respecting others.
Integrity - Being honest with students goes a long ways. When I do not know the answer to a question I let the student(s) know that I do not have the answer then I make it a point find the answer and relay the information to the class as soon as possible. When grading exams or written essays I apply the same grading criteria to all students. As an example, the students know the exact parameters of written essays. Every student is given the "MBC Essay Grading System."
Positive attitude - Regardless of any setbacks that occur during the day or in the classroom I try to maintain a positive attitude. I encourage my students to remain positive, even when their grades are not exactly where they want them to be. I promote the idea that they have the intelligence and common sense to overcome any obstacles that the class (or life) may put in front of them.
Understanding and respecting others - I have a racially and ethnically diverse classroom. But I have yet to meet the student who is offended by addressing them by their title and surname, i.e.; Miss Smith, or Mr. Chang. Courtesy is always the tone of the class; please, thank you, yes sir, yes mam (my apologies to Senator Boxer).
Victor,
Great to hear. Keep doing what you are doing.

I too was pleased to see how much I have already incorporated into my classes. I was taught that basic "people skills"...listening, respect, empathy and honesty, foster communication. Education is impossible without effective communication.
Harry,
I think many people are surprised. That is a good thing. If you read this and it was Greek to you, then there would be a lot of work to do.
