We help students define professionalism by relating specific scenarios tthat are relevant to the industry. In addition, helping them realize expectations by our customers
Allen,
This is a wonderful task as it is very important to get the student ready for the interview, but also teach them what can and cannot be asked in an interview in case they may be manager one day.
Shelly Crider
Julie,
Customer Service is a must! There are so many stories out there of terrible customer service. We certainly do not want our students being one of them!
Shelly Crider
Donna,
I like the idea of a beginning and an ending course. This really wraps up the content.
Shelly Crider
one of the things we have our students do is to practice moch job interviews. This is important because no matter how well they can perform learned task and pass our curriculum test, there chances of landing a job may depend on their ability to present well in an interview.
We have a course where part of the training has to do with customer service and communicating information from the "customer" to the "tech" via a repair order (written order). It is very important that our students realize that what they write will be used to tell the "tech" what work he will be doing and what the "customer" expects to pay for the job.
We have two courses at our school that help students learn professional skills, Career Development during their first quarter, and Career Management near the end of their educational program. I am lucky enough to teach both, and I spend a great deal of time discussing the soft skills that students will need to be successful.
Matthew,
Some students get so involved in the content of the book that they struggle when in the real world. I like how you give examples.
Shelly Crider
Giving them real world examples of where such skills are needed. I will also explain to students how those skills will help them in the real world,
Steven,
I am glad you have these standards. I hope they are upheld. At our high school there is a dress code, but it is not enforced. So sad.....
Shelly Crider
We have strict proffesionalism standards at our school. these standards include proper dress codes, time and attendamce, language and respecting other peoples differences. We promote these standards and include that they are just as important to the students success as the technical knowledge they are gaining. We consistently hold proffessionalism standards to a very high degree and include these standards in our grading procedure
Pamela,
Not only will they feel valuable, they will know that the money they have spent on their education is well worth it.
Shelly Crider
It is important to ensure that the student feels that they are valuable and required for future. The they will be gin to launch out to find out what they need professional skills to accomplish.
paul,
So many students do not realize that ethics and attitude really play a big part of customer satisfaction.
Shelly Crider
Karmle,
Role play is an awesome way to get students to think outside the box. Try to bring in some guest speakers as well!
Shelly Crider
John,
I like the fact that your students must walk the walk and talk the talk!
Shelly Crider
Bernard,
I love the fact that you mention professional attitudes as well as professional skills.
Shelly Crider
I try to let the students know the importance of interpersonal skills, ethics and atitude. I also try to help them plan for things not to go perfect and that things go wrong sometimes. and I tell them that their atitude can have alot to do with the final outcome of whatever challenges that thay face in life and in their work
Our Medical Assistant students, for the most part, have not worked in a professional arena. So, to help them learn the necessary skills, I have them role play Front Office scenarios...good and not so good! It really maks a point.
Professionalism is talked about the first time when our school reps meet with a new student and his or her family before they come to the school for a tour of the facility professionalism is discussed, it is again adressed at orientation and again several days later on the first day of school, in fact all rules and regulation are covered at this time, we want our students look neat and clean cut at all times, they must wear the proper uniform, work boots, have the proper hair styles and use proper language at all times. We tell our students what the business world expects of them every day.We also have a course in professional applications, how to fill out the paper work pertaining to the work that has been performed for the customer, so billing can be completed properly.
