communicating professionally

I find that students have trouble communicating at a professional level. Talking to a fellow co-worker or boss or customer is totally different than hanging out with your friends. Many younger people today don't know how to "change" to a professional.

Abigail,
I like it!! We need to enforce what employers would enforce. Many students have worked in a factory in which they use a point system for attendance. Using a point system is basically what we do when we enforce a late penalty.

YES! I have students email me if they are ver going to be late or miss a class and I correct their form reminding them that this is a skill they must use in the future when communication with their employers.

miranda,
That is a good point. Practicing "how" to say something is just as important as what you say.

I agree that students have a hard time with communicating at a professional level. I remind my class all the time that sometimes its not what you say to someone its how you say it that makes all the difference

Henry,
This is why it is important for instructors to share personal experiences so that students can see that the work world can be different from the book world!

Very good observation I have noticed myself, and at some points been frustrated with. I can only hope once these students become working individuals they will understand their customers are going to expect more. Answers, advise, and recommendations will all require excellent communication skills.

Kimberly,
Students do not realize how important professionalism is. To keep a good job....this is a must!

I teach Interpersaonl Communication Skills for one program but it is not a course offered in our other programs. I try to utilize the curriculum in other courses emphasizing to students that professionalism, common courtesy, and communication skills are important to any profession.

Latoya,
I like the professionalism you show with just the name! As a laid back society, we tend to forget about Mr/Mrs/Dr ect.

Shelly Crider

I completely agree with your comment. On the first day of all of my classes I inform the students about how they need to address me on a daily basis "Ms.(my name)" and I also lay down the rules for proper e-mail, telephone, and speaking etiquette. As an instructor I will correct my students and do my best at teaching them about professionalism because some students simply don't know.

can it be viewed in a student environment communicating professionally is like learning a new language and almost a lifstyle change ?

Matthew,
This is a true statement...may want to be "friends" with their boss.
