Teamwork

Students working as a team toward a common goal, share responsibilities and this experience would be really helpful to success as professionals.

Sarah,
You will find teamwork in the workforce as well.

Shelly Crider

Sarah,
Creating teams really depends on the topic, the term, and the students in your current class!

Shelly Crider

I agree, I think it is important to learn how to work with others.

I have made teams by randomly selecting names or have purposely put stronger students with some who are struggling to help with ideas and suggestions.

jodie,
The real world workplace is not always as pleasant as the book world....good job!

Shelly Crider

I do role playing with a student as the patient, a student as the M.A. and several students observe the scenario that my team came up with. After the scenario we all get together as a group and discuss or "debrief". This includes what went well and constructive reminders for what could have been improved. Feedback from all students has been great including the observers. The observers and patient feel like they get recall of the do's and dont's. The M.A. usually has already caught their own short comings.

David,
Ahhh I like how you mention the transfer of knowledge from one student to another!!

Shelly Crider

Working as a team does provide the students with a common goal. To achieve this goal they need to work together if this is achieved they will be able to enhance there skills and be able to teach those skills to another student. While learning how to co depend on someone else.

Carla,
I believe you have been given some good examples. Some other simple exercises would be Jeopardy, or role play as patient.

Shelly Crider

Does anyone know any good, specific exercises for building teamwork that would relate to the medical field? I find lots of exercises on building teams for business, but not so many that relate to what students might do in terms of medical teams.

Brad,
I like that you call it collaboration rubric. Students do need to know how to be a team player.

Shelly Crider

We use collaboration rubrics that all team members fill out for each member of their team. This is a way to get the full story from a team and make sure those that do not carry their weight get a grade that reflects that. I give the rubric to the team at least twice during a project to allow for improvement and learning.

Victor ,
You can have the project busted up in different parts and each part must be signed off by the leader, which sends to the instructor. There are other ways out there as well......other thoughts?

Shelly Crider

What would be some ways to incorporate an individual as part of a team. Many students tend to say that not everyone participates or that one person has done all of the work. How should we improve that?

Beatrice,
Teamwork is a professional task students need to be at ease with. Many people do like to work alone, but we need to be able to work as a group as well.

Shelly Crider

Marsha,
Good point. One of the first task a team should do is to define roles and expectations.

Shelly Crider

James,
Teamwork is definitely everywhere. I like how you keep an eye on students to make sure all are participating.

Shelly Crider

Occasionally you'll get a student that works better alone. I have had students in the past that I have had to take them in a direction that helps them understand that they're there to help the others learn sometimes this will get them to turn a somewhat negative attitude around and brings "value" to the team atmosphere. The instructor must facilitate the "Team approach".

Teamwork of course takes two or more willing participants. Having knowledge of the what the other member believes is teamwork helps alot in efforts of producing effective TEAM work
