Student Benefits

What are some benefits that students can get from service learning participation?

yes indeed , i strongly beleive that students that are participating in service learning like internship would be benefiitial  to them  to understand their job better in the future.

@bartholomewt : My students definetly benefit from service learning participation. They are often very excited to go out in to the hands on work place and see what they have been taught in the classroom, it is an absolute experience they embrace. It often helps as an instructor to understand what we need more or less of in the classroom setting.

Students benefit from service learning by getting the hands on approach to discover what they like or may not like in a field. It gives the student first hand knowledge of what to expect.

Exactly, real world experience is what I have always felt was the most important take away for the students. Because if they do not know how to act properly and interact correctly it will hurt their job opportunities.

Lecture benefits all the students.

Some of the benefits students can get from service learning would be the ability to meet new people who could potentially become their employers or may recommend their services to other organizations.

Some of the benefits of services learning are building self-esteem, soft skills, leaning to a better way to meet new people in the community, and self enpowerment.

The student can get changing perspectives that are relevant within the real world. In addition, the student can recieve various approaches from peers and leaders to use in future studies and in ones career

With service learning participation the students get to excersize their technical skill & apply them to industry experience. Giving them a hint of what to expect later on.

What are some benefits that students can get from service learning participation? Some of the benefits that students can get from service learning include practical experience as well as an opportunity to practice the skills and knowledge that the student already has developed.

Agreed. Students learn technical skills in class but having the ability to use their skills in the "real" world is important. They get to put these skills to work working with different a wide spectrum of personalities and skill sets.

chef,get answer to the question.
they do build beter self-esteem when they get help from those who are their equal and their own peers. soft skills do get better and that bring more confidensce to each person and will help in making them more coachable and humble.

Service learning provides opportunities for students to enhance their communicative, leadership, clinical, and collaborative skills. It provides students the opportunity to apply their proficiency in acquired skills in a community setting, enhance their comprehension of the subject matter related to the skills, and enhance problem-solving and critical thinking skills. Students have the opportunity to understand and appreciate diverse cultures and communities and social issues affecting communities. In addition, students have the opportunity to network with professionals and community members that may lead to employment opportunities.

When i was in College' Involvement in the community was not an option, only "where"
the community service was perform.

This will vary from student to student but, at a minimum, one would hope the ability to apply skills and engage with the community. To see that they are part of something larger and that they can make a positive contribution to the community as part of their normal lives.

Service learning is constructed to benefit both the student and the community. It increases the student’s personal growth, it aids students in becoming active contributors to their communities and enables students to expand their skills by working with their skills in community settings.

Having the opportunity to put their skills into practice and gaining confidence in those skills, soft skills in dealing with people they might not normally be in contact with, motivation and excitement in continuing their studies,

Dear Adel ,

Thanks for the insight on the benefit to students when they have to write about their experiences. We found that having students keep a journal on their SL experiencee helped them to see--and to remember--everything they learned from the events.

All my best,

Trent Bartholomew

I agree that service learning is the perfect arena to discover strengths and weaknesses. It also presents challenges in different areas of communication - verbal, nonverbal, interpersonal, and academic if they are asked to write papers detailing their experiences and contributions, all of which enrich their potential. It can help students to narrow or broaden their focus towards the job market as well.
