I try to always have stations set up so the students can rotate through and not get bored when we are having an hour or two of hands on labs. For example : Vitals, strep testing, urinalysis and setting up an exam room.

Leslie, you are very welcome. I wish you much success with them!

Michele Deck

Thank you so much! I'm excited to implement these great ideas. -Leslie

Leslie, if you go to the internet and search for "K-12 jeopardy", there are free templates that teachers have created and will share with you free of charge.

Michele Deck

Do you just use regular powerpoint and ask questions or is there a jeopardy powerpoint template somewhere?

Linda, I love this idea and I'm sure your students do, too. Sometimes using an activity unrelated to content can re-energize a group. Thanks for sharing your successes.

I actually play a game that is unrelated to the content I am teaching....my favorite is scary movie characters. I have pictures of them and have the students name the movie they are from. The last picture "I say it is almost too scary to show" is a picture of Mr. Weeks the Business English instructor.....I have them exchange papers and grade them (we all say out loud what movie each was from) .....everyone stands and if you had 15 wrong, sit down, 14 wrong etc... the last few standing get a gift .....

Shirley, I'm glad you will be planning to refocus your students at intervals. It works!

Michele Deck

I haven't had a lot of ideas for refocusing until this class. I will have lots of tools to choose from now. I like to tell stories of my experiences in the nursing field where I worked as a charge nurse on a busy med-surg floor. This always seems to draw them back and makes the lecture more interesting for them.

Patricia, it is good to review multiple times in and out of class time.

Michele Deck

Constantly asking the student what we just talk about in a review manner will always help the student to recall what was taught in class

Laura, having an open mind to ways to teach can be a great asset in an instructor.

Michele Deck

I agree with you how are you going to know if something is good unless you try it. I like your idea. I am not an instructor yet but I am sure learning alot from these modules and strategies from instructor that care about what they do.

Kimberly, I love this idea and might use it myself for infection control review.

I actually purchased the game "Cooties" and use it as a tool to help review material.

I will put the students into teams and ask each team a question and if they answer it correctly they get a piece of their cootie. I continue to ask questions until one of the teams has fully built a cootie. I have found that by adding the game/competition aspect into a review keeps the students engaged and makes them really enjoy a review rather than tune me out and not get the full benefit from the review!

I would take a short break. After break, I would follow Bloom's Taxonomy (knowledge, comprehension, application, analysis, synthesis and evaluation) with the pairs or groups to demonstrate what they have learned.

Lisa, I use this acitivty as well and agree this is a fun, active and successful method.

whenever I sense the students getting restless, I will have them play a short game to get them up and on their feet. One of my favorites is to have them finish the sentence "have you ever?" They each write something that they have done - anything goes! - on an index card. I will then read them aloud and those people who have done that particular thing will get up and high five each other. I have learned some very interesting things from my students!

I use a variety of power point games to review main points. We have food and make it a party. The students have a great time while learning and/or reviewing.

Jamilya, I know you will find both ABG go fish and the Maracena Greta activities to teach your learners.
