I agree, hygiene is extremely important, not only in the medical field. Just walking into the classroom and getting a whiff of someone smelling not-so-pleasant is uncomfortable. Just imagine having that person sit close to you for an extended period of time. The idea with the mirrow is also great, I think the question "Do you want this person treating your mother?" is an excellent way to drive home the point of professionalism and how we are perceived and judged.
Richard, thanks for sharing this tip with all of us, including the students.

People have the choice to smoke or not to smoke. The problem is that some smokers do not know how their clothes carry the order. As my students attend their hospital assignments we stress the importance of understanding how "sick" people feel and that cigarette smoke can and quite often makes patients feel even more sick.
Once the students realize this situation they work well with each other to remind the class of this particular hygiene problem.
I like this exercise. New students are not likely to be neat and tidy because they have not had to be like that in daily life. I will also suggest the full length mirror in our locker room!
This is so true. If the students don't practice good hygiene, how are they going to teach their patients how to keep health with basic hygiene practices.
As an instructor, we can't stress enough about good hygiene. Being in the dental field, we sit very close to our patients; so we need to smell clean. This includes keeping the perfume light, make-up light, breathe smelling good, etc...Good hygiene needs to be reinforced throughout your whole program because what is considered good hygiene to some is not always the case for others.
Yes, good hygiene is important
When I give my new student orientation, I have a section dedicated to talking about hygiene. Everyone always laugh, but I remind them that it is no joking matter. Good hygiene is very very important working in the healt care field. We work close with patients and one another, so keeping it clean is a must.
Being a massage instructor hygiene is one of the most important issues that stress to our students. It is so crucial to look and smell professional in this line of work
I agree it is sometimes a surprise to students that they can not be visible.
I know the tattoos and piercing are very popular right now, but our students need to understand that the population of patients do not appreciate them the same. We need to make sure the student understands that this is not a profession that allows them to be visible.
I couldn't agree more! A person's hygiene can say a lot about a person.
I will have to agree, practicing good hyigene is also part of professionalism.
Matthew, I agree that good hygiene is important and not something to ignore.
