Hygene
I like the idea of the Hygiene Hi-jinx. It is good to see what people think of professional hygiene
I agree, How can we work in the hygiene field and don't follow proper hygiene... it just doesn't look professional if we don't.
Jose, it is a safe way to teach what can be a sticky topic.

This exercise makes the student take a good look at themselves and address points which need improvement and points that are acceptable regarding hygene.
Sara, modeling good hygiene speaks volumes to patients, families and students.

I completely agree! It is also so important to make sure not to have bad breath! Many times, hygiene students are in close proximity to the patient so this is so important. We are also trying to teach patients good oral habits and it is better to show from example as well.
Elizabeth, it is important, but do your learners realize how they individually come across to patients? I know your aim is to build their awareness.

As a dental hygienist dental and visual hygiene is extremely important.
kathy, this is a challenge we all have in common.

I like this idea . I find it difficult to enforce professional hygiene and dress code in class
Hygiene and professionalism is covered very well in our curriculum, but I am amazed at how many times it is necessary to take students aside and explain that their own hygiene is inadequate. It is uncomfortable for all parties involved. Any ideas?
grace, those who re new to teaching hygiene are sometimes surprised that you must be very specific as to what your expectations are.

AS hygienists hygiene is one of the most important things I try to convey to the students. The close proximity of us to our patients can present problems if our hygiene is not what it needs to be. Hygiene can be looked at differently by each individual so I have to be very specific about what I expect from them.
Juliana, I just spent some time as a patient myself, and was reminded how offensive smells are to a person in a hospital or clinic.

I totally agree with this statement. We are health care professionals, and our patients will judge our skills based firstly on how we appear. We must instil confidence and trust in our patients by being professional in all ways.
mary, I agree this adaptation with the instructor is another great approach.

It is truly important and needs to be reinforced. You can also use the staff surprise to make student aware and apply it to a particular instance in the learning environment with the instructor.
This is a difficult concept for a lot of students. They feel if they have the knowledge that is all that matters. It is not just hygene but bed side manner that matters to me. If you treat me poorly you can smell as nice as the next person but I don't want you working around me.
Kim, it is sometimes quite a challenge for people to see themselves through someone else's eyes.
