Jamilya, I wish you much success when using this activity.

I love them all! Such great ideas! Definitely going to incorporate Brush w/ Fame for teaching HIPAA. It's very important for individuals in healthcare to know how easy it is to break patient confidentiality and privacy.

Sandy, it is hard for them to grasp becuas they can be concrete thinkers as novices.

Sandy, I agree, teaching is a great way to learn. I recently attended a psych nurse educator's presentation at a conference, and she had us each listen to an MP3 player for 10 minutes while walking around. The sound file simulated auditory hallucinations, and was very impactful.

I think the Patterns of Thinking activity will benefit my lab where students are taught to anticipate procedural sequence. I am looking forward to implementing this.

I think it is important to find a teaching style compatible with your personality and temperament. Although I am not a games person (except mah jongg...), I do incorporate fun and creative activities into my psych nursing class. This week, for example, we are discussing sleep disorders so I've created various scenarios which require small groups to create posters summarizing the main points of the chapter. I'll place these scenarios in a bag and each group will pick a scenario and have 15 minutes to make a poster. Then each group will do a poster presentation to the entire class. Teaching is a great way to learn!

I will definitely use Patterns of Thinking: I teach psychiatric nursing and the students generally have considerable difficulty understanding mental health concepts, in part because these concepts are novel and inexact. Patterns of thinking might help my students organize their learning in a way that makes sense to them.

Weakest Think provides opportunities for students to use critical thinking skills in hypothetical everyday situations. During this problem solving, you may be able to assess the logic as to why they arrived at their answer. The feedback you receive enables you to determine if students truly understand the concept.

Alain, I'm glad this is one you see is adaptable to your class.

i like the A and B game, teaching my students to be observant and know how to assess a patient when meeting for the first time.
I usually do role playing but this will be a good addition to my classroom games.

Jennifer, I agree that they sometimes learn more using these ideas and not focusing on the learning.

Active Learning, I feel, would describe me best. I like to have my students up and practicing skills. Even when we are reviewing for exams, I use interactive games. There fun and the students end up retaining more information than from me just giving out answers on a review sheet. In my opinion, students can learn more when they don’t know they are learning.

Suzanne, I'm glad you have seen the benefits of collaboration.

Michele Deck

Suzanne, yes engaging these students takes planning and variety.

The item I thought was interesting was the Hangman game. I have created my own jeopardy vs what is on line, and it's interesting to see the shy students compete with the more out-spoken students and it works out great. The competition is a good competition and they rocked out their upcoming final when presented to them. I feel the jeopardy game helped, so now it's the Hangman game.

I agree with your comment. Group activities work well in my classroom. The students seem to do better when they recieve peer encouragement as well as critique. It decreases anxiety the shy or quieter students have.

I teach both lab and lecture. I use a combination of teaching styles to suit our student population. Most of my students are just out of highschool or have taken there GED. Using visual aids along with my lecture compliment the didactic learning.

Dorothea, I'm glad you like them all. I hope you pick one or two to try in the next few weeks.

Donna, thank you for your thoughtful observations. I appreciate your sharing .

I like ALL activities; Brush w/Fame, Patterns of Thinking, Weakest Think, and Wheels of Supplies.
These activities allow students and instructors to explore new learning techniques. Group activities of course materials will ensure the success of higher learning which is a plus for all involved.
