I have explained also how you need not mention a name to get into hot water.I know of an incident where two surgical techs were talking about a laprascopic cholecystectomy at lunch and a complication that occured. There was several of them scheduled that day,and a family member of one of the cases overheard part of their conversation. This family member of course only knew their family member was having that procedure done that day.Naturaly they infered that must be whom they were talking about and demanded to know why they were not told of any complications. To them it was as if something had happened even though nothing had at least in their case but they never should have heard ANY details of ANY case.Lay people can get confused easily and we should help minimize any fears they have by not overwhelming them with details to start with. When they hear the wrong details and about someone else to boot we only add to their fears at one of the scariest points in life.So no harm came to the patient but it was still not victimless. They also still got into trouble.

GILDA , which mirrors life and the real world.

We are rewared for good and bad consequences.

Lawrence, this is a perfect example to give to students who do not understand the implications of these types of actions.

I was working at a clinic as a RadiologIC Technologist and my supervisor was concerned about her grandchild and accessed his record. Needless to say, that was found out during an audit and she was fired. I pass incidents about this to our students to emphasize the importance of complying with HIPPA.

Beth, I'm so glad you make this situation real for your students. It is a valuable lesson to hear someone else had bad consequences from his/her behavior.
