Carlos, I agree completely. Sometimes introverted and/or shy instructors find this difficult to maintain throughout a class, but it is a powerful strategy that works.

Good eye contact is a crucial part of communication. When given correctly it demonstrates that you are in tuned with what you are saying, it shows that you don't fear the person that you speaking with and you come across as being genuine. Giving good eye contact makes you a more effective communicator.

As professionals in the medical field, we teach our students how important eye contact is to both our peers and patients. Eye contact boasts both of confidence and allows us to determine feelings other individuals may be having.

Kim, I agree that touch is as important as sight when "reading" patients and must be modeled and taught. Thanks for sharing your experience.

Not just eye contact, but you need to be able to "read" your patient whenever you are working with them; even when you may not be able to look at them. Being a PT you can't always have eye or facial contact with your patient but how they feel in your hands is important as well. A normal knee buckle during ambulation is different than a patient buckling because they have coded.

Amy, thank you for sharing the variety of types of eye contact. It is important students know what each means.

We teach our students the importance of not only eye contact but different types of eye contact, the hard stare, roaming eyes, rolling eyes, all with different meanings and implications.

Deborah, it is important for us to be sensitive to this and teach our learners what it takes in the job work, slowly shaping their behavior.

Establishing good eye contact with students the first day is key. Most of my students are younger and are differnent cultures. A lot feel eye contact is not a "good" thing to the teacher. When I answer a question and all eyes go down I will re-phrase. That seems to help get a postive action and response!

Tom, this is an excellent real life story to share with all learners in the future.

Most people don’t think eye contact is real important, but one of my students did not get the job because of poor eye contact in the interview!

Ralph, thank you for sharing your experience with the importance of eye contact.

Eye contact is such an important tool in assessing the understanding and sincerity between the two or more people that are communicating. It helps demonstrate trust, confidence or even deception. Good eye contact is essential in developing a bond between receivers and senders of information.
