Using Learning Techniques
Playing games that take the interest of the class is a good learning technique.
I have found open book quizzes do not work for my students especially if it was a homework assignment. However, open book quizzes are a great tool to see if they actually did the homework. I find most students spend a majority of time looking for the answers rather than answering the ones they know and looking the ones they don't know up.

I had my students create their own games, for example candyland. The student redid the board with information we studied in class. We played the game as a review before the test. The students loved it amd really did learn.
Yes, I set a time based on what it would be if it was a closed book quiz in class, unless the assignment is a homework one.

This is a good way to get the students into the textbook.
Since the majority of my students have families and jobs, what I like to do is give open book quizzes immediately following my powerpoint presentation. This way it forces my students to read the chapters, otherwise most of them will not.
Any engaging method is a good one when we mentally lose learners.
