Studying more than one way

I have noticed with adult learners that their study habits are poor, so I have actually taken time to talk with them about some of the things that were listed in this lesson. For example, instead of just reading the material have someone quiz you and make sure that you study the material in different a different order every time because the brain will make new and different connections with every different way you study. With all that being said, I haven't managed yet to incorporate that same theory into my classroom. After reading some of the responses so far I am definitely going to give some og the games listed a try. I like the Taboo idea and the idea where I put the class into teams and have one member of the team come up to the board but stand facing away from the board and the team members have to make the person guess the term.

Ivelisse,
I agree it does make it look more manageable and less intimidating.

I enjoy finding different ways to study Medical Terminology. One way that I have found useful is the index cards. I find that my students have an easier time learning if they can break things down. This method makes the material less overwhelming

This concept is one the students learn for the first time with medical terminology. Repetition is key!

I have had many students who do not understand the neccessity of repetition. With medical terminolgy they have to repeat and again learn a different way each time. I have also tried to stress to them the need to look at the material daily and not just before the test.

I agree with all the examples. I have found that students learn in different ways and many of them like the games for a review.

Chemo, thanks for sharing your teaching successes.

Any alternative way to remember an item for students is such a plus.

I have those that tell a stories to remember
I have those that need to draw pics to remember (and I let them even on their tests papers if it will help them to remember)
I have many that will use the note cards and/or make up their own mneomics. Whatever works, I truly encourage them And many times the students who are great a remembering items, I will have them sit between the students that haven't learn how to master studying skills, and so far it's owrking.

The more strategies you suggest, the more likely all students will find one or two that work for them.

I agree with your ideas, adults learners have not been in school for a while sometimes and they need suggestions for new ideas- index cards and rewriting notes.

Misty, thanks for sharing your thoughts. I'm glad you are going to try some of the ideas to teach content in different involving ways. I find that students are more likely to repeat what they have done versus do something I tell them. You can tell them to study in different order, but until you do something in class that reinforces that message (like activities), they don't see it as important.
