Loss Student's interest

To bring back interest you need to make subject interesting and repeating explanation till they do not understand.

Michele, this is an excellent example of the power of visual media, even if the teacher is the visual.

I found that my mlt students are visual learners. When teaching about antibodies, i will do a small lecture and pretend i am an antibody to demonstrate the differences in them. it keeps them focused on the material and all of them have told me that while taking the test they visualized my explanation of the structures and could remember the parts.

I like your idea of getting the students up and moving. Often times during lecture I will explain a procedure or component of the anesthesia machine, and then immediately have them get up from their seats and walk to the lab where I explain the procedure/component again with visualization.

Najla, we must help each and every student we teach to be successful.

Checking to see if the learners understand is very important.I use this technique by asking questions about what they just learned and I found that the students are motivated to answer.

Peggy, I like the walking review you have created here.

I take them outside if the weather is permitting. We walk around the building and it wakes them up. This is a time where i let them talk about things they arent quite understanding or we go over things that just require memorization

Rose Ann, this is a great idea. You can also have the students place post its on a model or their partners.

our class was having some difficulty with directionality concepts (medial, lateral, proximal, distal, etc) and i had the students stand and locate these words on their bodies. The visual and auditory link to a location on themselves really helped them to remember.

I am trying to understand them the lecture.

I strongly agree with that ,since they have experienced whatever events in their life whenever the information they are is related to those events ,they will remmember it easier.

Richard, relating information to student's life experience is a great strategy.

I have realize that another way to keep the student's interest is to try to explain to them when they have questions related to diseases that involves the body system that we are teaching them ,it makes them understand clearer the disease process affecting the patient.

Richard, I agree, homework and carry over activities between classes reinforce and clarify learning.

Richard, evaluating learning is an essential skill gor an instructor. Keep checking in, using a variety of methods and your students will be successful.

I am using several ways to make sure that they understand ,it is very risky to move on from one topic to the next one without checking that ,I always either ask them questions or use the board to get feedback from them,I usually ask them to answer the questions or complete diagrams or correct false statement that purposely i write on the board ,just to make sure that they understand and that I can move on to the next part

i agree with that ,that's why we need to spend lot more time to prepare a class to make it interesting for them in other to counteract the exciting( not necessarily in the best way)environment that is competing against us

whenever the students do not understand we have to use different ways to convey the message if the initial one was not successful , if it is possible to use practical ways or situations familiar to them that can in a more practical way make them understand we should use them

although this is a very way to make students retain the information,it is also important to give them home assignments related to that so that them can continue reinforcing it at home,to make them retain the information for a longer period of time
