Helping students retain medical terminology

Some of the things that have worked for me are games played with flash cards such as tabu or jeapordy on the board. Sometimes they get pretty competitive but in fun. They have a good time and then when you ask them a few words the next day what they mean they remember it.

So many great ideas. There is Jeopardy online where you can create your own questions and answers. Then as long as you have your exact title and password you can make changes to any template that you create and play at anytime.

Being a former elementary education teacher, I am a great advocate for hands on learning and game playing. It took a somewhat dry lecture into a fun learning environment inviting the children to a class they truly enjoyed. I carried this concept into the adult education field by adding Jeopardy, bingo, concentration,etc. into my regular teaching tactics. The students love coming to class. Thank you so much for more ideas to take into the classroom. It is appreciated.

Our classes are two hours a day, four days a week. Every new day that we come in I like to first review with them before I move on to the next words. I never start new lectures without reviewing what we have learned thus far.
I try to make the review fun by using flash cards and sometimes dividing the room into two groups and see which team remembered the most from the previous day.
The students seem to enjoy it and once I know they are comfortable with the material from the previous day they look forward to the new material.

I never thought of scattegories. That is a great idea.
I have to try that in my class when I teach it again

often times we do opposites along with a simon says type of game to demonstrate things such as prefixes like tachy- and brady-. Then I also like to do common combining forms with the body systems they pertain to. It's easier recall information that's new when it's coupled with stuff that's familiar. I also make them break down words they are having trouble with so that they get used to "translating". Reviews are often in "Game Show" formats with teams and there is lots of laughing. I like to pair strong students with students with test anxiety so that they get positive associations with the review. I have seen success in these areas and will look forward to more positive ideas in the next sections of this seminar.

Cheryl, sometimes we as educators have to do things we are not familiar with, so I'm glad you see value in these ideas.

I'm usually not much of a game player, and am therefore not familiar with many games, but this sounds easy and like students would have a lot of fun with it!

I have also created a jeapordy type game for use in retaining classroom material although mine is done via powerpoint. It has been a lot of fun for both my students and myself. My quiz grades have continued to improve since starting this particular activity.

I have also found using Scattergories is a great game. You give the students a letter, such a B, they have to name various body organs, parts, processes, diseases, suffixes, prefixes etc that begin with that letter. Plus I find with 26 letters in the alphabet you always have multiple ways to change things.
