Crossword Puzzles
Are used for extended-learning activities. The student is engaged and learning and will complete assignment because it is fun and they enjoy the process. Puzzle can be used as test, quizzes, defining terms, learning anatomy and body parts.
Just about everything you can think of in the classroom to increase a learning concept.

I find crosswords to be challenging and its a good way to stimulate those minds who are more eager to be challenged individually and may be at a different level than others in the class
I use crosswork puzzles for extra credit.
I have never used the crosswrod puzzle for a quiz. I will review that idea for my next class.
Donna , yes the act of filling it out and studying the ones that personally stumped the student can reinforce difficult terms or concepts.

Using crossword puzzles is a great opportunity to have the student practice and answer different topics you have lectured on. They also can use a corrected one for a study guide.
Ya know, I had gotten away from using crossword puzzles as reviews...but I'm going back to it. I had simply forgotten about them but they have always proven to be a fun way to review!
