Sadly, only hangman. HOWEVER, since I am now teaching anatomy and physiology, pictionary and charades sound like fun. The lectures are often so long that we need to stop and take a walk outside to wake them up. not good!
I love to play games with my students, hangman, bingo, scrabble, jeapordy etc. They love it and the grades reflect it!
Kimberly, you could also have the students trace each others outline on butcher paper and then fill in the organs if people are reluctant to write on each other.
The MT book we use recommends using washable markers to outline the major muscles on a classmate, then label the muscle. Haven't tried it yet, but hope to have a willing participant on Monday. I think the idea of drawing on a classmate will really get the students involved.
I also like your flip card idea. Thanks for sharing your successes.
I have created a jepordy like game. It works great!. I split the class into 4 groups and we have a prize to the top group.
The clip board but will be trying others that have been suggested in this course.
I enjoy having my students make up quizzes with answer keys on medical terminology and have them take and grade each other's tests.
Charades is a great hands on activity for teaching and reinforcing. Keep up the good work!
Let's make a deal can be good as well and people love it.
I actually have used the charades in the past. I found that the students loved it. It is a great way to get up and move. They sometimes forget how much they are learning because they are having such a fun time.
Well when i tutor students i write down the prefix or suffix of a word from there spelling list; then have them create words in a timely matter; as a way of getting the mind flowing and depending on how many student they team up or its one against the other, then who ever whens recieve a reward of "career cash," which is a reward systems we have at our school, where the students can cash in an recieve back pack, sweat shirts, pens, notebook, etc
I ask students to use their creative minds and come up with games to use for the entire class. We have as well used games such as jeopardy, bingo, wheel of fortune, and price is right! I have been thinking of a game such as Let's make a deal.
Career cash sounds interesting. Thanks for sharing your application of jeopardy.
I often play jeopardy and give out career cash
Emilie, if you use a wet erase marker, you can even have the learners choose ones to write on the beachball. Thanks for sharing your ideas.
I usually ask the students to help me create new ways to learn the new terms. Or if they can't come up with new games, I have asked them to update a game we have played in class. Sometimes it may just be redoing different terms, or a make over for the whole game. Hangman is currently being changed into more of a Wheel of Fortune type of game. It is still in progress, and I think I am as excited to see the results as the students are!
I bought some mini beach balls and put parts of terms on them written in black magic marker, then I tossed them around the room and students had to match up the parts of the term to make a proper term.
I support your assertion that lecturing for hours is not the only way to teach, it is just one piece of it. Good luck in all you do!
Making terminiology using hands on methods can be difficult to think of, but hangman helps to make it more so.
