Melissa, thank you for sharing your mixed teaching strategy and how it works for you.

In my classroom, I've used music videos from different cultures to help students to become more culturally sensitive and to understand that other cultures have different ways of seeing and doing things.
I also use strategies YouTube videos, charts, and pictures for the visual learners.
I use role plays and skits to appeal to learners as well.
Julie, it is possible to have the students make youtube videos as well.

Jumana, I use games like Jeopardy, group projects and presentations to reinforce learning but the idea of making a Youtube video would be beneficial too. Thanks for sharing this learning appilcation.
Wendy, I find that any way we can create self awareness in learners, the more they can take responsibility for their learning. Thanks for telling us your experience.

I teach a Behavioral Foundations course to dental hygienists. In week 2, we study various learning theories. At this point I have the students do a homework assignment where they discover their individual learning style and then I make personal suggestions as to how to apply elements of this course to their own learning. From there, they branch out to examine other learning styles for both theoretical and then clinical patients. They seem to enjoy the exercise and find it helpful.
Tina, if a students knows which type of learner they are, it is possible for them to have study plans that make learning fast and efficient.

I have used the applicationof learning theories in my class for Medical Review. In the second week of class I ask the student what type of learner do you think you are and what benefits will this have to help you study for your cetification exam.
I tell my students that they must experiment with the different types of learning habits that they have learned from a specific instructor. Many student respond by saying by playing a particular game in class, or memorizing a funny phrase to help remember hard words or phrases. Jarring the memory by something that they are familar with is a learning theroy, just like the "Rapper".
This coming week the student will be taking a mutiple choice test, so I will have to be alert to how my student have remember things that I have gone over with them, on the different types of learning theories.
Elizabeth, this is a great source of video variety.

I have used You Tube videos. I found videos that contain songs that describe my subject. I have also created some scenarios’ in which students are to answer the questions provided after reading the scenario and then present to the class.
Radha, as long as your learners are involved and engaged, they will learn from you.

In my coding classes it is not possible to apply any learning theories except numerous coding exercises for practice. However for A&P and medical Terminology classes we use flash cards, films on the body systems and also crossword puzzles. It helps and I am able to hold their interest for the entire class time.
Gail, thank you for listing some of your teaching strategies. Others will be successful when they try them because they know you were.

Using playdough to form the organs of the body, then putting them into systems. Using "jingles" to learn the organs and pathway of systems. Color coding...example, putting all the functions of the digestive system in red. Using flashcards to create the memory game for study. Bounce a ball off the wall with each term and definition.
Roberta, were they the same or different than they thought at the beginning? This would be a great awareness building activity.

When I was teaching I asked each adult learner what their style was and had them put it on an index card. Then after a month I passed the cards back out to each student I thought matched the particular learning style.
Jumana, it is so easy to make your own videos now, you are samrt to do that. Your students will benefit from your activities.

I use a lot of Web 2.0 tools avialable free of cost like Jeopardy to help my students learn. I like to incorporate Youtube videos to reinforce the learning. I like the idea of making my own youtube videos for my students to learn. This way they can hear the video whenever they want.
Kristine,
I too use the song Staying Alive for CPR technique. I heard it first through the American Heart Association and ever since then it just seems to click better with students. On a similar note, when I teach EKG or A & P of the heart, some students have difficulty retaining the order of blood flow through the heart. I have challenged my students to make a song reflecting the flow and it's amazing how much more excited they become about learning. I think the best is when they make up a dance to go along with it!
Amy
Raylene, thank you for sharing your successful teaching idea. Now others can try it, too!
