Course Discussion Questions as Assignments
I really like the suggested practice of classifying discussion questions as assignments. Without that, I think it could be too casual and not directed towards the learning outcomes.
It helps me get better results when I state the purpose of the assignment, the relevance to the learning objectives, etc. This helps me connect with the students. The assignments are clearer and make more sense.
In that I generally dislike "semantics" in arguements, in this case I'll agree with the changing of the term " disscussion" to "assignment"
A "discussion" to me has a visual scene where people are sitting around, sharing un-supported opinions, and "chewing the fat". No one generally is more than entertained by the process.
An "assignment" is something that one HAS to do, requires more academic rigor, and suggests a review by other parties who are some how "grading " the results.
If I want to discuss things, I'll go to a sports bar. If I want to learn something, I'll take part in an Assignment.
While taking a American History course online I admired the instructor's unique approach to her discussion questions. They not only highlighted the period but they allowed the students to "put themselves" in the scenario. For example our assignment was to research 1920's ads. During my search I came across skin creams ads for African Americans on Google which were quite prevalent during the period of the Great Migration. Not only were they fascinating, we then discussed and debated on the class blog, the ways in which the phenomenon still rages today. The instructor achieved her goals:To have her students refine their search skills, and to think critically about the issues of the times, and to connect past and present trends.
Good point. Discussion questions should be aimed at the course objectives, not just questions.
Discussion quaestions can also aid in individual assignments if both are tailored to stated learning objectives for the course.
when referring to a discussion question as an assignment, this signifies to the learner that they must participate in order to gain the associated points. This is very good incentive for them to engage in the conversation.
Good point....discussions are very important to an online class.
