Best way to execute exams
I am concerned about exams online. How do I gave an exam and know that it is truly accounting for the students understanding of the material. In a traditional class, they are given with no open books, etc. How do we get the same type of results giving online exams?

Excellent! Test banks are not always correct as well as being hard to read at times!

I think in order to avoid cheating on exams is to go back to the Socratic method to measure mastery of the concepts. Another idea is to avoid using test banks for students, and develop a better standardized test system. Exam guards help!

I am a big believer in assigning final projects in lieu of the traditional final exam. They take longer to grade, but they are also a better indicator, IMHO, of how well the student has grasped the material.
In the real world, people use reference material but know how and when to use it. Assuming that exams are timed, students will need to have memorized the material or have a really quick method of accessing it.

I agree with Ms.Crider in that we have to design different ways to make sure that our objectives are being met in the online environment. I teach a Medical Insurance class and I have developed a series of assignments that require the students to create vignettes of patient issues such as not understanding their medical bills, explaining the coordination of benefits process, etc. This help the instructor to gain a clear sense of whether the student really understand the terms and concepts that they are studying.

Make the exam questions very specific containing contents that was covered in detail in the middle of the course. Point to specific chapter questions that was brought to attention in the midst of the course. In reference to this question, I think it proves that online courses are not as effective as regular courses.

Essays or research papers can be used as an "exam" as well as other assessments. You do not have to do the normal true/false or multiple choice. Even a short answer exam is good.
