Unlimited Quiz assessments
I think it is great to let the student re-take the quizzes as many times as they need to get a perfect score. It will force them to take a closer look at the questions that they got wrong and find the correct answer. Also, sometimes in retaking the quiz they may get an answer wrong that they previously had gotten correct. Retaking the quiz forces them to reassess their answers.
jeanita,
Most of the platforms will allow you to randomize the placement of answers as well. So student 1 may have a question with the answer being A, and student 2 may have the exact same question but the answer is B. You just have to make sure you do not use "all of the above" as an answer!
Shelly Crider
There are some portals that give you the option to randomize the questions. So you can post 30 questions for a 10 question quiz and each student will get a randomized 10 question quiz.
In as much as I agree that quizzes should be retaken multiple times, Anne's comment makes more sense. Retakes should be randomly displayed from pool of questions from the same learning objectives. It is up to the determine number of times he or she should retake the quiz.
Heather,
Maybe have the students do a essay on one of the questions they got wrong to explain the concept....maybe for extra credit.

Christine,
Repetition is good in most classes from CJ to Medical Coding! The more you do the same task, the more it becomes a part of you.
Shelly Crider
Anne,
Memorization has it goods points in its own place, but I agree, not in a quiz!

scramble the questions.
Ask different, similar questions.
More important than retaking the exact same quiz is showing the correct answers. This allows the student to just log the correct answers in order to increase the score. I think that the correct answers should NOT be shown prior to taking the test again. It should just be noted which answers they got wrong.
Repetition is good in Math so taking the quiz as many times as possible to get the correct answer is good. It will force them to review the part of the solution they went wrong. However, they may tend to memorize the answers so sometimes, it is a good idea to change the question after, maybe, 5 tries. It will be about the same topic but just change some of the numbers or the variables. I am not sure though, if this will be applicable to other courses.

BUT>>>the quizzes should be randomly created from a pool of questions. It should not be the same quiz every time. If so, it promotes memorization of the quiz, not learning the answers.
Julie,
We are here to teach the student, so to take a quiz more than once will increase the knowledge.....at least we hope so!
Shelly Crider
Karen,
If a student wants to retake the quiz more than once, they really want a good grade as most students will just move on.
Shelly Crider
Gary,
Test questions should be available to interchange in and out as instructor feels needed.

I have been on the fence about unlimited quiz attempts, but I can see how they can be instrumental in solidifying the information. Being able to separate it from the "exam" and looking at it as a tool for the students own self assessment is a great strategy!
I use the unlimited attempts on quizzes in my course. Although the questions stay the same, the order changes everytime the student takes the quiz. Repetition is so good for them in remembering material. I see the quizzes as a "homework" which helps the student master the course content.

It would be better yet to have a different set of questions on retake. That would assure that the comprehension of the material is there rather than the expert application of the process of elimination.
