I also like the use of rubrics as a student and as a facilitator. However, not all students notice the rubric.

Dan,
another good point! Rubrics can actually help instructors see what needs to be beefed up!

An excellent discussion regarding rubrics. They not only help the student, but have actually helped me in designing thorough assignments with very focused objectives, all spelled out in the rubric.

I concur that rubrics allow students complete understanding of what is expected of their submissions. It also allows an instructor to communicate crucial or important aspects of the lesson being reviewed. I like to hand out rubrics along with the assignment so students have a clear comprehension of what is expected.

I'm a big fan of rubrics as well. I teach composition, so I like the six traits of writing- arranged by each trait, from beginning to mature writer. This gives the students a good sense of what is involved in good writing, and that spelling, mechanics, and grammar (the part that's easy for teacher to mark) are only a part of the complete picture.

Alfred,
I love rubrics for students. This way they cannot state "I didn't know that"

I post rubrics for assignments as well. It really gives them information of what I am expecting from each assignment and what they should focus on.

Rebecca, I, too, encourgae students to check their work against the rubric before submitting. In some cases the rubric may be vague and addtional explanation helps the student to achieve a higher level of success. My biggest problem with rubrics is and always will be the "subjectivity". It is so hard, sometimes, to explain that aspect of it to students when there is a range of points in each category of the rubric. Make sense?

Mahmoud, I agree that posting rubrics is an excellent way to inform students of your expectations. I encourage students to check their work against the rubric before they submit it. If they can see evidence of each component in the rubric in their assignment, then they know they have a good chance of earning a solid score on the assignment.
