On-site visits as part of multimedia in on-line course

I consider on-site visits--by students to locations where they see course contents demonstrated in real life--to be an important part of an on-line course, no matter what the course topic is.

Does anyone have experience with this?

Perhaps students could do an audio-visual project, along with journaling, to apply their knowledge of a course module, lesson or topic, and share it with the rest of the class? This intellectual interaction would test comprehension and provide focus.

Hannah,
Excellent plan! I am sure the students enjoy this as well.

I have a prepress class, where I ask students to visit a printer, and to do a small research project while there. In an art history class I teach I have a field trip project. I always make alternative projects for students who cannot do an on site visit.

Joel,
Skype and other programs like GoToMeeting are great to get students virutally together.

That is a great idea in concept but not always feasible for the student. With video-conferencing (skype, etc) widely available could this serve as an alternative method for those that are not able to go to a physiacl campus.

Kathy,
That is so awesome! I am so happy to hear that. As you know, books give give you information, but seeing is believing!!

Not only do I instruct an on-line course, but I also work in the field, and I am constantly encouraging my students to visit my workplace so that they can visually see what it is they are striving for. I think it's very important for the students to experience this firsthand and it really gets them excited for their chosen field.

Your question stimulated a great idea. Instead of bringing my nursing students to our clinical lab, I will look into video-taping our simulated mannequins to create an on-line lab.

We all like to have interaction. Makes us realize that the class is "human".

Yes, I think this is an effective element for online courses. Several students have dropped their online classes because there is no on site interaction.

Very good resource!

Thank You... They offer online lectures for free.
All you have to do is subscribe to the lectures alert updates on the website and they will send you notifications of the online lectures.
Some colleges offer the same service, just check the website.

The Chronicles of Higher Education is an excellent resource!

This format seems to be the future of online courses. The Chronicles of Higher Education uses this format for group interaction on the online lectures for faculty members.
This can be a useful resource if set up properly.

yes and very interesting I must say!

I think each student would need to pick their own local site, and then share the experience with other students in other places. Students would learn from each others' as well as their own site.

Does this make sense?

It seems learner-centered. It also seems to apply intellectual interaction to see how well students chose and utilzed sites. It would seem to be an assessment tool.

Thanks.

how do you get all of our students there from other states or that might be overseas? Interesting idea.
