Online Learning
I have never used online learning before. I know that a school that I used to work at had it and the students where split in half on who did or didn't like it.
We are now going to be implementing distance learning at my school that I work at now and it seems to be alot of work on the instructors. We will not only have to teach our in house classes but also the online courses.
Does anyone have any good suggestions on how to incorporate both?
Barbara,
Not sure if you peer will respond, but I have taught a blended class before. It is actually really nice. You hold class and students get hands on experience with you and can have all questions answered. Then follow up with assignments online. This shows if they really listened to you in class!

Does your school offer blended classes? That is something I have seen where I am at. The student attends an on-campus class for the first day and then makes appointments to take tests--the rest is online.
I would imagine that a lot of what you do in the "traditional" classroom can be modified to be used online. Do you use PowerPoint in your traditional classes?
Rina,
Oh so true. Just as not all students are suited for traditional high school.
Shelly Crider
I find that not all students are well suited for learning online. It does take commitment and self-discipline to be really successful in an online environment. Even with a well-designed, well-prepared course given by an enthusiastic teacher, some students are still more successful in a traditional classroom setting.
Amos,
A visible instructor will have visible students!
Shelly Crider
I agree-- Availability is Key. This helps the student not to feel disconnected having very visible instructors, more so than a traditional program--
I agree, because some of our students take on line and they are worse off than when they were in class, because they don't conprehend as well.
Quiana,
I love that fact that you stated that you needed to be available. That is oh so important.
Shelly Crider
Yes lectures and preparation of classes in both traditional and online environments are important. Also making yourself available as much as possible in the online realm is also key!
Q
gilbert,
You do have to love the online platform for being there when the student needs it to be!

I find on line learning very interesting especially in the world we live in. As a parent, you have to deal with a family, work and many other activities .On line learning is very practical; every institution should use on line learning to accomodate students.
Is it possible for you to post videos of your lectures on the online class? I find that these can help online students engage in the material more, especially those who are used to in-class presentations.
Good question Shannon. If you are creating a blended class (class at building and then online), it is nice to have lecture or hands on project with your face to face meeting and assignments/quizzes/and research online. Just a thought.....
