Absorb, Do, Connect
I like to use the Absorb, Do, Connect method when teaching online course. I find it to be well organized, user friendly and very interactive.
The absorb stage is designed for the student to learn the new concept by reading, watching or listening to something.
In the do stage, they have an exercise or experiment to put the new skill in action.
Then the connect stage helps them to link the skill to prior knowledge or to future uses in life or the workplace.
Does anyone else use this method? What are your thoughts?
Hi Jessica,
I love this concept!!!! The connect prong is a very important part of the educational experience. It is one thing to teach the principles at hand but adding the element of practical professional relation is a huge benefit to the student.
I think all too often students are provided information that is quite lacking in relation to real life scenarios. By connecting students to professional practice we can be sure to close the learning gap.
Thanks! Shannon
That sounds a lot like how I approach literary analysis, Jessica. My three questions are, "What does it say? What does it mean? What does it matter?"
Students need to understand what the materials say first, before they can engage with the material. Analysis requires their being able to state, in their own words, what the material means in the context of what they are studying. Asking "what does it matter?" helps students make connections between what they just read and previous knowledge, future actions, and what is going on with them and their lives.
Thanks for sharing your version! It is very succinct!
I like the logical order of (Absorb, do, connect). This logical order seems to give me a feeling of being in a live classroom.
This is a simplified way of covering all the bases in instruction (on ground or online). I like it! The "connect" stage should also include an assessment component that reinforces or test the knowledge.
I like this way of characterizing online learning. It isn't different from on ground, but it is a great tool. I'd like to add at some stage the interaction between students while learning and doing. I love the connect stage which is often overlooked. Finally, there is always the necessary assessment stage.
