Double-Edged Sword

Technology has greatly improved the ease of which we are able to attend school, even with busy full time work schedules and such. However, with the "disconnect" of being in an online environment, the quality of the education as compared to that of being in the actual classroom suffers greatly. This shortcoming of the online environment is not easily resolved. As both a full time online instructor AND on-ground instructor, as well as a full time online student I am constantly searching for additional methods for improving online educational quality. The search continues.....

Kevin,
Good point. Technology for online classes will only improve as time passes.

Having taken quite a few online courses, including my entire masters degree program, I agree that at its current state online learning leaves something to be desired when it attempts to copy what goes on in a classroom. However when online learning takes what it does well and focuses on these things it can be quite good, and this technology will only get better over time while classrooms stay pretty much the same.

Will,
I agree. I too teach face to face classes as well as on-line. Reaching across that disconnect as an online teacher is a challenge. I don't think it will ever be reached as hard as we try to develop different methods of delivery on-line classes.

Will,
Try doing videos of yourself for your online classes.
