Structural integrity in form of Hands on Learning
One of the students’ reflections in software testing course is the need for them to practice real hands on testing. This can be achieved by instructional designers incorporating real life software testing projects (dummy project) into the virtual classroom to enable hands on experience on software testing projects. This strategy will help integrate theory and practice and thus enhance students’ learning outcomes. Your thoughts?
Caryn,
Oh so true! Hands on is different than just reading and labeling. There have been times when students have changed career paths due to finding out the experience was nothing like the book.

I like the concept of a journal to get them into the material but would like to incorporate a live lab class to the online course in order to closely monitor students progress in learning the various hands on techniques and incorporating them into a cohesive treatment plan. I feel the online course could provide consistency in the delivery of the curriculum to the students, however, since the hands on is their bread and butter and important to a successful career, incorporating a live lab would help to monitor their progress.
Lisa,
Oh I love this! Writing in a journal enforces so many concepts...English, writing, organizational skills and so many other concepts!

Having students submit a reflective journal or other description of what they learned through a program such as Voki can add another dimension to their work and further engage them in the course topics.
Dr. Henrietta,
This is a great idea. Those of you reading....I would write this one down on your resource list!

I often refer my students to pick any opensource project and get involved in testing it. That is another way to practice hands one experience.
Dr. Henrietta,
Yes, hands on experience is very important. A "dummy project" or any type of working project is such a great idea.
