How do you engage students who come from different backgrounds
I teach online and many of my online students come from different backgrounds (languages, social norms, values, etc.) Do you have any good strategies that you can share with me about how to promote students engagement in online learning?
I'm not sure how one can engage students with different backgrounds align widgets and social norms. Erie it I think the best way to do it is to percent the material in an objective manner and not make any assumptions about what people know, I don't know many other way to do it. I am open for suggestions.
Brenda,
You might want to think about adding International content to your class. If you do discussion questions, you might want to add.....what would someone do in this circumstance if they lived in China......or something along that line. You never know when your job will take you to another country and it is nice to know what is acceptable in different cultures.

I too am interested in what strategies are used to embrace students of diversity?
William,
I like have the different backgrounds as well. I tend to learn a lot each teaching term from the students!

Actually I like the opportunity that the students come from different backgrounds and places in the country. Often during my live chats I will ask students about where they are from and what is going on in their area. I use this as an “Ice Breaker†before I get into the main topic. It seem‘s to loosen the students up and they chat more during the lecture.
James,
Love that.....you could actually have students send you discussion points in an email and do the same type of task.

I set up a forum time where we had a topic, (anatomy class) and we wrote up a major discussion points, I opened up the room without saying whos idea it was andworked with the students to engage in conversation, the common topic gave a good foundation toengage in conversation.
Mountasser,
You have an excellent opportunity to get a lot of involvement from your students by adding to your discussion questions....From where you live, how do you see.....then finish your discussion question. This will allow a student to discuss their diverse backgrounds AND teach others what is important from that culture.
