Satrohan,
In my experience in classrooms, the only way to really get consistent results with individual performance is to set mandatory guidelines and expectations. I would assume this would work with online courses as well. What has your experience been with this?
Farida:
Assigning students to groups is a good strategy as asking students to assign themselves to groups can take a long time in an online environment, and may never happen. Providing ground rules for the operation of th group would also help. Overseeing individual performance can also go a far way.

To ensure student participation in online group projects, I would probably assign people to certain groups, and make sure that the group project has enough components where each person in the group should be delegated a specific part of the project.
Farida:
I believe that inadequate student particpation will also be prevalent in the online setting. In a traditional classroom setting, I have to face members of my group as well as the Instructor at least one time a week. This can be enough pressure on me to participate. This evidently is not the case in an online setting.
