Chats are great for students to help each other. We as instructors can create an assignment or lecture that makes perfect sense to us, but may leave the students confused.

Students can help each other in chats, because they need to learn from each other. We don't know all or have all inofr that can help them, so getting involved with each other lets them get used to interacting with others in many kinds of enviroments and settings.
I think that recording the chat time is a nice feature. That way if you missed something you can catch back up and not fall behind.

That's true but chat is like having a lecture in real-time and this will help bring the gap with online universities. Some students may not participate or stray from commenting but at least you are givng your lecture notes to them live.

Thank you for using the chats! This is an excellent way for students to find out who is who.
I use the chats to allow the students to express themselves and qualitatively connect with each other. Then I have them interact with the content. Being online gives us alot of leeway for different delivery of content. With youtube a whiteboard, polls etc. a number of creative interaction platforms become possible.
you are right....it is important to see what others have to say. You can usually get a good tip from the discussion board as well.
