Christine,
I like the inclusion of the link! This eliminates accidentally forgetting to cite.

Daron,
Family does have a way of helping, but that happens even in the elementary science fair!!

Cheating of course is possible in both learning environments, and both are not to be tolerated. In an online environment we can safeguard against this problem by using many of the tools that are available such as turnitin.com .

Shelly,

You make a very valid point. As educators, we are preparing students to go out and find their place in a professional environment. The assignment, or course, is one part of the equation, but meeting deadlines, and how time is allocated in meeting those deadlines are extremely important. According to nocheating.org, stats show cheating among high school students has risen dramatically over the last 50 years. As designers, we are faced with an increasingly difficult task of creating online material what will challenge...but not discourage...a student from completing it in a timely manner. I'd like to ask your opinion on how to encourage students not to wait until the last minute to complete assignments.

Clearly, cheating is not to be dismissed in any activity, online or on-ground... Online, managing cheating gets a bit complicated not only because it often is not clear to students what is or is not cheating... The preponderance of websites that post previous works of students from around the world often promotes the feeling that if one copies someone else's work it's ok because "everyone does it."
This is the equivalent of a person claiming to the police officer that he was going 20 miles over the speed limit "simply following traffic." A $200 ticket will ensure that following violators does not diminish the violation...
What surprises me is that there is no regulation or legal repercussions for the websites mentioned above, even when some of them market their services to write papers for others!!!...

We should be concerned and I think we should be more vigilant in the online setting because there are many websites wherein students can just type a certain question and an "instructor" or someone who has knowledge about the topic can just post the answers to the question. I have encountered some students who do this and they even include the link in their references.

I believe that there is an equal amount of cheating, perhaps done differently. An individual can employ friends or family to do their work for them or use the work of students that have already completed the course.

Heather,
We are preparing students to be successful. If a student runs out of time and cannot complete an assignment, they will cheat. What will they do in the workforce when they miss a deadline?

Shelly Crider

Jeremy,
This is a true statement. Cheating has been around since the beginning of time and is probably here to stay, but we as instructors do not have to be content with it. Good post!

Shelly Crider

dwight,
Exactly. Cheating is bad for the student, instructor, school, and potential employer!

Shelly Crider

Nicholas ,
The media is full of examples of bad work ethics and terrible moral issues.

Cheating, plagiarizing, copying; isn't right in any scenario. I teach graphic and web design, and as a professional, violating copyright infringement can be a costly and illegal decision, and the end of your career! All of my students are provided with information on what copyright is, how to avoid it, and how to avoid it happening to you. I think all students should be educated on what constitutes cheating, what the consequences are, and how to avoid it. I don't think it does the student any favors if any cheating incident is ignored, whether they are aware of it or not. In any profession, if a person is caught presenting something as original when it isn't, that can have catastrophic consequences to their career and future. We are preparing our students to be successful adults, and holding them accountable for their work and choices is part of that process.

I believe that cheating will always be a concern no matter what the environment is for learning. I read an article one time that talked about how the online course instructor used technology to combat cheating online. They used web cams to administer exams, eye movement was tracked, audio was monitored for someone else in the room, browsers were locked to prevent searches for information. This seems to be the cutting edge and possibly a little over the top in many cases though. I think the goal is to create content that requires a students opinion to be shared combats cheating enough.

I think we should be concerned will cheating occurs in any environment. It is not right and students should not be rewarded for it with a passing score.

Dwight Colston

I most definitely disagree. With our school environment, the thing that we are concerned with is plagiarism. Cheating in the academic environment breeds laziness and the likelihood of that behavior continuing into their careers. In the business of Broadcast Journalism, this type of cheating creates the highest form of distrust in your audience. So nipping that in the bud early on will keep them on the right track in regards to the work ethic and moral fiber.

Yes, at least they have a chance to learn how but then after that, no more excuses!

Andrea,
I like that as many students simply do not know the importance of citing or really do not know how to cite!

Shelly Crider

Matthew,
Even the question themselves can have a different answering order. What might be answer A for me, may be answer B for someone else.

Shelly Crider

Nashid,
Very good point! Let's build week to week so that the students want to come back to see what is next!
