Thanks and I agree with you. As an administrator who often finds himself registering students who either love online or are very afraid of it this hybrid course might help with students who are afraid of the online enviornment. Another consideraton that an administrator would have, is that in the same amount of time (say Monday night) you could offer two or three courses if the class met every 2nd or 3rd week, instead of just one course weekly.
Thanks for sharing, Bill. As you think through the differences in online and F2F learning environments (either as a teacher or as a student), think specifically about how the learning is actually advanced with the use of technology and/or the kind of contexts that can be supported by technology, such as chat or online discussions.
Hi Dr. Reynard,
I have to be honest with you. I have been in the education industry for a dozen years moving from and instructor to an administrator and it has been a couple of years since I taught in the classroom. I have not taught online but have taken some online courses. I am tasked with helping my instructors become better in the classroom. My organization does have an online school, I am not part of that. I am taking this course to learn myself and I know from my online course experience that the instructor we had used many different methods of presenting marketing concepts and often they did not have a grade component but his attempt at providing more to his students. Some of the things that he did provide where scheduled conferance calls to discuss class issues or case projects. He also provided emails to interested students on materials that he used in his consulting firm, which I thought very benefical. When I did instruct in the classroom I used as much computer materials that I could find. I believe that we have to use all that we can think of to make it fun for the student while still meeting the objectives of the course.
Thanks
Bill
Do you have any copyright support, Howard, to help with those issues?
I like telling the students to find links on the net to help them on something that they are going to doing in class the next day.
For our school we cannot use certain things ont the internet for copyright issues.but it works great for telling them where they can get extra info to help drive home a key point.
The internet is very helpful during lectures with same video clips, pictures, and various demonstations. It has made my job easier to do and the students can understand much more and the clarity is there for the student.
Isn't that dynamic, Ryan! The idea that we can actually benefit directly from the wider learning community is wonderful.
Its very helpful using the internet to look up information that is almost instant.
great search capabilty, also keeps instructors more consitant with information, a student can now check if the information an instructor has delevered is acurate.
Do you think it has actually the potential to change the process of teaching and learning, Charlene?
The Internet has enable communication to be immediate and enable instruction to be given in multiple (blended) ways. It can be used in a combination with a face-to-face and distance learning environment. You can incorporate audio and video as well as text to the online learning experience.
Howard, could you clarify your meaning? I'm not sure what you are saying that affects the learning process for your students...
I think it brings good things to the class is long as it is back up with face to face teaching.Be an instructor and have taken full online classes,it take very disciplined student to do well.
this is true and in our school is alot of hands on if they are not prepared when they get here it could affect the learning process for all other students.
Randolph, I don't reall understand your point here. Could you elaborate?
Excellent points, Walter. How have these changes affected your teaching methods and instructional design? How do you maximize the technology while maintaining academic rigor? These changes have challenged the very core of teaching and learning and many instructors feel overwhelmed rather than empowered. What are your thoughts?
The approach in designing a program is critical in today’s classroom, the workplace training environment makeup a span of four generations. Delivering, a presentation to this wide span of learners created challenges within the learning environment. I find it is best to engage the younger learners directly, asking questions and soliciting a response. The older workers are encouraged to speak and relate their experience to the lesson. To maximize the effectiveness of technology, I use a wireless pointer/with a mouse. I shift from power point to internet remotely. I give what I call rapid fire questions; these are designed to enhance the learning processes and create a class room activity while maintaining the interest of all. A required test is given at the end of the class, and they all perform well.
I look at the class room as a stage, a place where I can go and be the instructor that I am. The thoughts of failing are not realized. I read over everything. I practice and then deliver my presentation. The classroom is a place and if prepared becomes my stage.
Capturing information from the internet causes students to copy and paste their work and/or just rephrasing the text to receive a lower similarity score. There is no quantitative or qualitative research. I am finding that many students have difficulties critically analyzing information. They are searching for the quick answer without research. I have had students call me because they did not understand the assignment. I asked, “When you read the assignmentâ€â€¦. I was interrupted and the student said “I did not read it I just want you to tell me what to doâ€.
Many students are not reading the book. However, they are relying on the internet for academic information. Many sites are non-academic sites, therefore the academic competence as falls.
If we go to web based learning and face to face labs where the students must complete a lab project to pass a given course we won't know if the student has the knowledge to pass the lab
