Re: Internet Changes.
Internet changes the way people or Educated population communicate over this Technology, transporting information over distance.
The Professors and students are so good on distance learning, which they mastered already on this field.
Internet is best to say information sharing, information exchanging, collecting information. To day they used this technology to learn, study and use on their day by day live.
On line or hybrid learning is giving student a chance to stay connected with there Professors beside in class face to face connection, or half connection as hybrid class is offering.
I am a instructor who teach on campus face to face, but know I am learning how to transfer my lecture on line and be connected with my student all time. I find out, that you must be well organized and be on time, and due your work, and finished perfectly, many time you are falling behind and it is difficult to recover what really you missed. So far I am OK with this time learning and teaching. What abut you?
Robert,
Good use of chat! I like your focus on guidance and support with your students while they conduct their own research and analysis. Good job!
Dr. Ruth Reynard
One way I address this is requiring all students use professional and academic resources in their citations. I also cover this topic in my first chat when we discuss expectations of the course, where I give examples of websites to use and ones to avoid and why.
In my own experience as an online instructor, I was also initially hesitant but have found it has its postive and negative sides as well. While you are available more often, you do have more flexibility and can travel while teaching.
Carl,
Go to http://www.careercollegelounge.com/ and register, then search for the instructional exchange forum...
Dr. Ruth Reynard
I will be happy to. But I am uncertain how to access the instructional exchange forum in the faculty lounge.
Carl,
Great question - I would love you to post this question in the instructional exchange forum in the faculty lounge - this is a real challenge for all instructors using the Internet openly in their courses.
Dr. Ruth Reynard
I decided to comment on this because it came closest to my deepest concern about the web.
Much about the web I appreciate. In my course on the Manhattan Project my students quickly discovered how much information has now been released, and how exciting it is to read some of this stuff that changed the course of life.
It is also true that we are, within the last few years, beginning reviewed online journals. This is logical and great advance.
The concern is that there is a lot on the internet that is incorrect. Some of the incorrect material is intentionally so, while other material may just not be "up to the quality of a reviewed journal."
We are trying to make students aware of this by requiring them to follow the thread and read corresponding ideas on the web. Indeed, my colleague and I, who are team teaching a course, do not accept isolated web references.
Because the web is open and has a default "free speech," we must be careful.
Anyone have any thoughts?
Francis,
Yes, it does require more time, but all instruction requires planning, as we all know. Blended really does work better when the instructional design has been well thought through and when the instructor is flexible enough to accomodate the diversity of the students.
Dr. Ruth Reynard
OnLine requires an investment of more time than traditional classes. It is sometimes difficult to appreciate this but the thread identifies some of the effects 24/7 on point and on time. This requires instructors to be disciplined in how they manage their on-line presence. I especially liked the point about finishing well. The professor nailed it..."intentionally planned and designed".
Ardoush,
I think you raise some good points regarding online and Internet-based learning. Instructors must be "on point" and "on time" with their feedback and be available for students 24/7. I would encourage you, as you transfer online, to explore and plan for what I call the three c's - content, communication, community. Each aspect of those must be intentionally planned and designed. Good luck with your new venture!
