MaxKnolege and performance.

How much the webbing and mobility helped student learning and their performance?
From Professors and Instructors point of view, student have a new tools which are going to help understand the subjects better and easy to grasp the material discussed in "class" or on line.
But Student are not the same any more, when there were in class in past. They want use this technology any time, any where, all the time. My point of view is different, the Delivery of subjects on line or on web is easy today, what about student respond to that? It was not easy because, many student have tools but they do not have discipline, to do the job on time, on our discussion, it was mentioned that on line learning is 24/7, but in my hybrid class I saw 100% revers respond, they are always late and behind or they felt to finished their project on time. May be it is students fall or material is not well organized,or technical problem, or we did not gave student more time to process information and submit it.

Robert,
I think there is a difference between entertaining and engaging...the latter is our goal. While entertainment can engage it is not at the level which must be sustained for learning to take place - engagement may be hard work, rather than entertainment, but it produces results!

But at some point does it need to be always "entertaining" for them? I feel at times the content or foundations need to be taught and they may not be that exciting but it builds the base and then you can engage it practicing it.

I believe this is the challenge of good instruction... making the content student-centered,, thrugh an engaged learning experience.. versus the old sage on a stage lecture format where students were passive and supposed to be learning. Where students are engaged, learning is taking place - and if a student is interested in the topic, then it can seem fun as well. All of us like something that we understand.

Charles,

Yes, Charles, it would be faulty to have fun as the only goal :) thinking about how a class could be more enjoyable for the learner helps with instructional design....it becomes more learner-centered.

Dr. Ruth Reynard

One of your points is that "learning is enjoyable" many classes for instructors talk about making the class fun for the student so that the student will come back. Not that this cannot be done, but I often wonder if making the class fun and enjoyable is all the student sees and learning may not occur. I know this is a small problem, but how many students see only the fun and games of the class and the material bypasses them?

Ardoush,

I think you raise several key points:
- instructional design is central to an effective learning experience for students as an ineffective design can lead students into confusion and discouragement;
- students today have the same learning challenges as students in years past but in different contexts; that is, students always have had and continue to need to learn how to stay focused, manage their time well and complete tasks. With new technology, however, the learning curve is more obvious because the gaps are more obvious; it is quickly apparent when students are "missing" from an online discussion, or have not participated with their group online as their digital footprint is absent;
- although it may be easier to deliver content, the challenge remains to mediate the instruction effectively using technology and design the instruction well so that learning is enjoyable and successful for the student.

Good discussion.
