knowledge assesments
assesments are a good tool to gauge a students comprehension and retention of information.
If knowledge eixts only within the human mind (as a constructivist would posit), it makes it difficult to assess knowledge. Indeed, what one does is:
1. Compare the student's constructs to the teacher's.
2. Compare the student's construct to wider social contructs
3. To some degree compare the student's constructs to objective reality - if possible.
My position is that assessment should focus on how effectively the student particpated in social negotiation and collaboration in his/her effort to form workable knowledge constructs.
Thoughts?
I also agree. Busy work teeaches nothing outside the fact that the instructor isn't organized.
Ralph,
I agree as long as the assessments support the learning outcomes specifically ad aren't just busy work for students.
