web base training

I teach at a company that is moving to web base training. I feel this will be a great move, students that learn how to teach their self will be better prepared through out their lives. there is so much information avalible today right at their finger tips and they need to know how to use it.

Wayne this is why it is important for our students that are very against taking online classes to have some experience as they move in to the workforce. On my campus I hear many times that students don't like online classes and they came to campus for hands on training. Then I walk in my office and take a mandatory online class for HR or for training etc. I've seen students not apply for jobs because they couldn't understand the online application. We have to find a way to bridge the gap between campus based technology and online based technology.

Scott,

Good points. It also opens up wider parameters for exploration of the subject area than one instructor can provide.

Web based training is a great way to introduce subject matter because it allows the student to move at their own pace instead of a time slot dictated by the course. Students can review, play back to ensure they understand what is being presented

Jeff,
Cheating is always the challenge because, really, any system will be thwarted ny anyone who really wants to or needs to cheat :) I like the sugnature technology as it must be attached to a profile and from a specific user - not sayig it can't be cheated, though :)

can be effective, but how are we certain that cheating is preventive? Do we do the final assessments in-person?

Lisa,
I like this thought and would love to hear more from you on some ideas you might have in your field. I facilitate a forum in the Teachers' Lounge that focuses on these kinds of ideas...if you would continue the discussion there, that would be very interesting.

I teach hands-on medical skills, so I feel the hybrid approach would be better for my students.

wayne,

Very true - the flexibility and access to information will suit the students well but will also challenge the instructors to teach very differently from the conventional classroom context.
