Instructor Copyright Knowledge

What information about copyright laws has surprised you in this course?

Melissa,
I agree that they should be treated the same. I wonder if the laws pertain to non-profit schools, because they are supported by government money.

I knew that copyright laws were to protect the rights of people's properties, but really did not think about the economic importance and that the government wanted to encourage artistic works.

I also did not know that the copyright laws were enacted so very long ago by our founding fathers. The section on history is very interesting and helps me understand the law better.

Geri,

Yes, I totally agree that the library is a great place to start!

Renee Shaffer

I find that the laws and the language is so confusing that I need to consult someone in some cases because its not quite clear. I do think that the Librarian is a good place to start.

Melissa,
Oh, that is a million dollar question. Unless the federal government changes it, that is the way it stays. Our government doesn't work too quickly.

Renee Shaffer

That there are different parameters related to profit and non-profit schools. They should be treated equally in regards to copyright laws.

Marilyn ,
Yes, most people are unaware of this distinction.

Renee Shaffer

I find the difference between profit and non-profit institutions to be very surprising. With more non-profits getting more and more private funding, the line between them is becoming less distinct.

Michelle,
So glad that you are getting something out of the class. It can be very eye opening!

Renee Shaffer

I was surprised to learn about fair use and what is reasonable for faculty! I have been very curious about how to insert information into my courses without infringing on another's work. This course is proving to be VERY enlightening!

just about everything on the internet is covered under copyrights

Kara,
So glad that you are taking this course so you like all instructors can learn about copyright. No one told us about it years ago when I started.

Renee Shaffer

There are many things that have surprised me about copyright laws. As instructors, we just do not have the knowledge about these laws like we should. I am surprised at how long a law lasts. I had no idea they lasted that long.
Kara

What surprised me the most is that universities are being sued behind this. I would also have to say that the laws between profit and non profit surprised me as well. You have to tread very carefully when using other material.

I know there have always been grat areas in enforcing copyright law, and in updating them for growth technologies, but it is fascinating that it takes the government so long to do so.

I am always surprised when for-profit educational institutions are treated differently than not-for-profit institutions. While there is indeed a difference in the business model for each, not-for-profits are still "profitable," and there are stakeholders, if not shareholders, who benefit from the same. So, I think the dividing line should be educational or not educational in the legislation, and not a division based on business structure, i.e., for profit or not-for-profit.

I did not know that Sonny Bono was instrumental in passing new legislation that extended the term for a copyright. While he was indeed a congressman, I cannot help but think that he was inclined to work to extend copyright protection for artists because of his lengthy career in the entertainment industry. Very interesting nugget of information!

I would have thought that the same copyright rules applied to for profit and for non-profit schools. But now that I see when the latest updates to the laws were done, I see that happened before there was a large presence of "for profit" schools.

I was not aware that the laws applying to non-profit and for-profit institutions were so different. That being said, in regards to the TEACH Act, there was an excerpt from the course: "There are 21 requirements for instructors alone to follow."

Where is this list of 21 requirements? That would be extremely useful information to have.
